Why Indonesia could be a surprise frontier market winner post-election

The election victory of President Joko Widodo has created an investment opportunity in Indonesia, according to SooHai Lim, manager of the Barings ASEAN Frontiers fund.

The former governor of Jakarta, also known as Jokowi, was elected President of Indonesia in July, taking 53% of the vote. He will succeed Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on 20 October. Frontier markets manager Lim has 23% of his £362m fund invested in Indonesia, his second-largest country weighting after Singapore, and a 3% overweight to the MSCI South East Asia index. He expects Jokowi's term of office will be a boost for the country in the same way Narendra Modi's victory caused shares to rally in India.
